Historic Prize Money Milestone at US Open 2025

The 2025 US Open is making history as the first tennis event to reach $90 million in total player compensation, offering the largest prize-money purse in tennis history.

This represents a remarkable 20 percent increase from the previous year’s $75 million purse. This substantial figure positions the US Open well ahead of the prize pools offered at the other three Grand Slam events.

Prize Money Breakdown

The men’s and women’s singles champions will each earn $5 million, marking a 39 percent increase compared to last year. All rounds have seen double-digit increases, with singles first-round winners receiving $110,000.

Players reaching the semifinals are guaranteed a seven-figure payday at $1.26 million. Those who advance to the Round of 64 receive $154,000, while Round of 32 participants earn $237,000.

Historical Perspective and Evolution

The US Open’s prize money journey began in 1968 when the total purse was $100,000, with the men’s singles winner set to receive $14,000. Interestingly, that year’s champion Arthur Ashe, being an amateur, couldn’t accept the prize money, which went to runner-up Tom Okker, while women’s singles champion Virginia Wade earned $6,000.

A significant milestone was reached in 1973 when the US Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to offer equal prize money to both men’s and women’s competitors, with champions John Newcombe and Margaret Court each receiving $25,000. By 2003, the singles champions’ prize money reached $1 million for the first time, with the total prize money hitting $17 million.
