A Historic Royal Visit to Canada

Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited Ottawa on May 26 and 27, 2025, with the primary focus being the delivery of the Speech from the Throne, while also engaging with various individuals and groups representing Canada’s geographic and cultural diversity.

Strengthening Constitutional Ties

A significant milestone of the visit was Queen Camilla’s swearing-in as Canadian Privy Councillor. The King’s Privy Council for Canada comprises Cabinet ministers, former Cabinet ministers, and other prominent Canadians appointed to advise The King on important national issues, including matters of State and constitutional affairs.

The royal visit symbolizes “the bond between Canada and the Crown — one forged over generations, shaped by shared histories and grounded in common values. A bond that, over time, has evolved, just as Canada has, to reflect the strength, diversity, and confidence of our people,” as stated by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Engaging with Canadians

During their visit to Ottawa, Their Majesties met with over 1,000 well-wishers at Lansdowne Park, where they participated in various activities including a street hockey game. The public’s enthusiasm was evident with cries of “Thank you for coming, sir!” and “It’s an honour to meet you, your majesty.”

Legacy and Impact

To commemorate the royal visit, the Government of Canada announced a $50,000 donation to The King’s Trust Canada. The visit showcased Canada’s rich identity, cultural diversity, and the vitality of its democratic institutions, continuing the longstanding tradition of recognizing royal visits with meaningful gestures.

As Governor General Mary Simon noted, “The presence of Their Majesties at this pivotal moment in our history holds profound significance. It reaffirms the enduring constitutional bond that has shaped Canada’s journey into a proud and independent nation.”
