Unexpected Homecoming to Buffalo

Gabe Davis is making a surprising return to Orchard Park, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting that the free-agent wide receiver is signing with the Buffalo Bills. Davis will begin on the team’s practice squad as he continues his rehabilitation from a season-ending meniscus injury suffered in November while with the Jaguars. The arrangement will give him time to complete his rehab and gradually work his way back with hopes of eventually joining the active roster.

Career History and Impact

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Davis, who was selected by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2020 draft from Central Florida, had established himself as the team’s No. 2 receiver behind Stefon Diggs. His best season came in 2022, when he recorded 48 catches for 836 yards and seven touchdowns.

One of his most memorable performances came in the 2021 AFC Divisional playoff game against Kansas City, where he matched an NFL playoff record with four receiving touchdowns. However, salary cap constraints prevented the Bills from re-signing Davis after his rookie contract expired following the 2023 season. During his initial tenure with the Bills, he accumulated impressive statistics: 163 catches for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in 64 games.

Recent Jacksonville Chapter

Davis had signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March 2024. However, following his meniscus injury, the Jaguars released him on May 7, absorbing a $20.3 million dead cap hit to be spread over two seasons. Before his injury, Davis managed to record 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games (nine starts) with the Jaguars.

Future Outlook

Davis’s return provides the Bills with familiar experience and depth at the receiver position, where the team currently features Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Joshua Palmer as projected starters. The reunion is particularly meaningful given Davis’s continued close relationship with quarterback Josh Allen, who expressed his fondness for his former teammate before the signing.
