Epic Games Revolutionizes Digital Distribution with New Developer-Friendly Initiatives
Epic Games Store’s Bold Move to Attract Developers
Starting in June 2025, Epic Games is implementing a groundbreaking change to its revenue model, announcing that it will not take any revenue cut for games with under $1 million in sales. This initiative comes as part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the digital distribution market.
Current Market Performance
The Epic Games Store achieved a significant milestone in 2024, surpassing $1 billion in revenue, with total earnings reaching $1.09 billion – representing a 14.74% increase from the previous year. However, challenges remain: revenue from third-party PC games decreased by 18%, dropping from $310 million to $250 million.
Platform Growth and User Base
The platform has shown impressive growth in its user base, with PC customers increasing to 295 million, contributing to nearly 898 million cross-platform Epic accounts. Users logged 7.72 billion gameplay hours on the platform, though Epic’s own titles – including Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys – continue to be the primary revenue generators.
New Initiatives and Future Plans
Epic has announced the launch of “Webshops” in June 2025, enabling developers to host their own webshops through the Epic Games Store. This feature appears particularly targeted at mobile markets, offering developers a more cost-effective alternative to traditional in-app purchases on platforms like Apple and Google.
Looking Ahead
Epic’s roadmap for 2025 includes significant store improvements, with plans to release non-gaming apps and further expand their mobile store presence. These initiatives represent Epic’s continued commitment to creating a more developer-friendly digital distribution platform while working to increase its market share in the gaming industry.
