Historic Space Initiative Faces Setback

A significant milestone in Canadian space history was delayed when the country’s first-ever commercial rocket launch was postponed in St. Lawrence, N.L. The launch was meant to test NordSpace’s Taiga – a six-metre tall rocket created using 3D-printed metal. Despite the setback, plans are underway to expand operations in St. Lawrence with a second launch pad and infrastructure developments in the coming years.

Recovery from Summer Wildfires

The province continues to recover from devastating wildfires, with approximately 100 homes destroyed in the Kingston fire alone. However, recent rainfall and cooling temperatures have provided hope for firefighting efforts. The scale of impact is evident in the numbers, with 1,902 households and 3,590 individuals having registered with the Canadian Red Cross due to the wildfires.

Tourism Growth Despite Challenges

Despite various challenges, tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador has shown resilience, with nearly 226,000 visitors arriving by air or automobile through July, marking a four percent increase from 2024. The province has expanded its international reach with direct flights to London, Dublin and Paris from St. John’s International Airport, addressing previous concerns about routing deterrents for overseas visitors.
