Recent Tragedy Shakes Community

A tragic incident occurred at a Richmond Hill daycare when a vehicle crashed into the building, resulting in the death of one child and injuries to multiple others. The incident, which took place on September 10, 2025, has deeply affected the community.

Community Response and Leadership

Richmond Hill Mayor David West addressed the incident, emphasizing the community’s resilience while acknowledging the profound impact on residents: ‘We certainly are a strong and resilient community, but this is the kind of thing that really shakes us to the core. We need to come together at a time like this.’

Urban Development and Growth

Despite recent challenges, Richmond Hill continues to grow, with population projections showing an increase from 208,700 in 2016 to 277,900 by 2041. The city is expected to experience significant job growth, with estimates reaching 110,000 jobs, representing over 37.5% growth from the 2016 census period.

Infrastructure and Transportation Improvements

The provincial government and York Region have demonstrated their commitment to transit development with the recent opening of a rapid bus transit corridor along Yonge Street. This achievement marks the completion of the first phase of bus rapid transit within York Region, featuring 38 new stations along one of the region’s busiest corridors, offering 33 kilometres of efficient transportation service.

Healthcare Infrastructure Development

Construction has begun on the Carefirst Campus of Care York Region, a new 124-bed long-term care home in Richmond Hill. The facility will include a medical centre on the ground level and be part of a campus of care, providing convenient access to health care services for residents.

Future Vision

Richmond Hill is taking a comprehensive approach to growth, integrating sustainability measures across all stages of development, including urban design initiatives, infrastructure planning, architectural design, and public open spaces. The city’s strategy aims to create a sustainable framework that combines mixed-use development with transit-supportive concepts to reduce environmental impact.
