Independence Celebrations and Cultural Heritage

Mexico is preparing for one of its most important celebrations – Independence Day. Street vendors are already displaying flags and patriotic items, with celebrations culminating in El Grito on September 15th and a public holiday on September 16th. This year’s celebration will likely create an extended long weekend.

Political and Institutional Reforms

Early September has been marked by significant developments in bilateral relations with the United States and major domestic political milestones, as highlighted in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first annual government report. A notable constitutional amendment has been approved requiring all state and federal judges, including Supreme Court and Electoral Tribunal justices, to step down and be replaced through popular elections in 2025 and 2027. A new Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal will be established, though UN and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights experts have expressed concerns about potential impacts on judicial independence.

Economic Progress and International Trade

Mexico’s economic performance remains strong, with exports to the U.S. reaching a record high of $45.36 billion in July 2025, representing an 8.2% annual increase. The first seven months of 2025 saw total exports to the U.S. of $309.75 billion, up 6.5% year-over-year, maintaining Mexico’s position as America’s top trading partner.

Public Safety and Security

There has been significant progress in public safety, with official reports showing an average of 59.2 homicides per day across Mexico in August, marking a 32% decrease compared to September 2024. A new security cooperation program between Mexico and the United States has established a framework for addressing shared challenges while respecting Mexican sovereignty.

Cultural Events and Urban Development

Mexico City is hosting its most important architectural festival, MEXTRÓPOLI 2025, expecting around 100,000 visitors. The event focuses on ‘Collective Housing’ and aims to address current urban challenges through workshops and talks on balanced urban density, architectural flexibility, recycling materials, and community environments.
