Verdict and Sentencing

A court in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, has found Tampa Bay Rays player Wander Franco guilty of abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor, imposing a two-year suspended prison sentence with restrictions on approaching minors.

Case Details

The case involved Franco’s sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl when he was 21. While prosecutors had sought a five-year sentence, Judge Jakayra Veras ruled that Franco would avoid prison time if he adheres to certain conditions. In a related ruling, the victim’s mother was convicted of sexually trafficking her daughter and received a 10-year prison sentence after evidence showed she sought financial gains from Franco.

MLB Status and Future Implications

Franco, 24, has not played for Tampa Bay since August 12, 2023, when social media posts about the allegations first surfaced. He was initially placed on administrative leave for the remainder of the 2023 season and the start of 2024. After being formally charged in July 2024, he was moved to MLB’s restricted list for failing to report to the team.

Career and Legal Challenges

Franco’s future faces multiple challenges, including the status of his 11-year, $182 million contract with the Rays, his endorsement deals, and most critically, whether he can secure another U.S. visa. The U.S. Department of State has the authority to deny visa applications for individuals with criminal records, particularly those involving sexual abuse and crimes of moral turpitude.

Current Status

The suspended shortstop has been detained and admitted to a clinic in the Dominican Republic for mental health issues at his family’s request. While his future in MLB remains uncertain, Franco has indicated he continues to train. MLB has stated it will complete its investigation at an “appropriate time” and emphasizes its commitment to its Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
