Historic Rivalry Renewed in National Championship

The 2025 Mann Cup, Canada’s senior A lacrosse national championship, kicked off on Friday, September 5, at the historic Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster, BC, featuring a rematch between the New Westminster Salmonbellies and the Six Nations Chiefs. The Chiefs won their previous encounter in 2023 in five games.

In a surprising turn of events, the New Westminster Salmonbellies have taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, effectively shutting down the Chiefs’ powerful offense. The Six Nations team now faces mounting pressure to turn their fortunes around if they hope to keep their championship aspirations alive.

Venue and Historical Significance

The legendary Queen’s Park Arena, built in 1930, features its iconic wooden floor as the main attraction. Despite its age, the venue remains a premier lacrosse destination in Canada. The 3,500-seat arena generates an intense atmosphere with warm temperatures and loud crowds. The facility is nestled within Queen’s Park, surrounded by various sporting facilities and community amenities.

Championship Legacy

These two clubs represent the cream of Canadian lacrosse, having accumulated an impressive 32 Mann Cups and 22 runner-up finishes between them. The Salmonbellies hold the record for most wins and appearances in history with 24 titles and 22 additional finals appearances. The Six Nations Chiefs have maintained a perfect record, winning all eight of their previous Mann Cup appearances, and are now pursuing their third consecutive championship.

Elite Competition

The caliber of play in this series is exceptional, with both teams featuring roster quality comparable to NLL All-Star teams. The level of professional experience is evident, as nearly every player on both sides has significant NLL experience.

The championship’s dramatic conclusion will unfold through September, with potential games scheduled for September 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, and 13th if the series goes the distance.
