A Historic Broadcasting Legacy

VOCM, broadcasting at 590 kHz in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a longstanding AM radio station that first went on air on October 19, 1936. The station is currently owned by Stingray Group.

VOCM holds a unique position in Canadian broadcasting as one of only four radio stations in Canada with call signs beginning with the prefix ‘VO’ – a distinction dating back to pre-confederation Newfoundland. The other stations are VOCM-FM, VOWR, and VOAR-FM, all broadcasting from St. John’s.

Current Operations and Programming

The station maintains its commitment to local content through popular talk shows including ‘Open Line with Paddy Daly’ and ‘On Target with Linda Swain,’ where local issues affecting Newfoundland and Labrador are discussed with active audience participation through calls, emails, and tweets.

These programs have consistently performed well in provincial radio ratings, distinguished by their non-partisan approach – a notable difference from typical North American talk radio.

Network Expansion and Recent Developments

VOCM has expanded its reach across the province, with network stations in multiple locations now simulcasting VOCM’s programming full-time. This includes stations in Marystown, Clarenville, Corner Brook, and Gander.

In a recent development, VOCM has modernized its presence on the Burin Peninsula, with its Marystown frequency transitioning to a new FM position at 88.3, ensuring improved access to news and current events for listeners in that region.

Looking Forward

The station’s parent company underwent a significant change when Stingray Digital Group Inc., under the leadership of Eric Boyko, took control of various broadcasting undertakings across multiple Canadian provinces, including VOCM’s operations in Newfoundland and Labrador. This transition positions VOCM to continue serving its community while adapting to the evolving media landscape.
