Current Situation at Manchester United

Andre Onana is currently in discussions with Turkish club Trabzonspor regarding a potential loan move, with the Turkish side already initiating contact with Manchester United about deal terms.

Despite being under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, Onana’s position has become complicated. The 29-year-old missed the entire preseason due to a hamstring injury and has watched from the sidelines as Altay Bayindir started all three of United’s Premier League games this season.

Recent Performance and Challenges

Onana’s tenure at Manchester United has been marked by controversy, particularly following a recent shock defeat in the EFL Cup to Grimsby Town, where a critical error led to their exit. Former United goalkeeper Ben Foster noted that while Onana is “a fantastic shot-stopper,” he “makes way too many mistakes.”

During the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Onana conceded 44 goals in 34 starts, and Manchester United’s recent form has sparked discussions about potential goalkeeping additions after two challenging seasons with Onana between the posts.

Future Prospects

While the main European transfer window has closed, Onana’s future remains uncertain. A verbal agreement has reportedly been reached between Trabzonspor and Manchester United for a loan move, though the final decision rests with Onana, who is under contract until June 30, 2026.

Manchester United maintains they are comfortable with their current goalkeeper roster, which includes Onana, Bayindir, Lammens, and veteran Tom Heaton. However, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has warned that the club risks finishing “eighth or ninth” unless they address their goalkeeper situation.
