Travel photography has come a long way from the black and white days of Ansel Adams, as he introduced the rest of the world to the National Parks of the United States. Digital Technology has become a standard in any hobby photographers gear bag as it becomes less expensive to produce beautiful digital photos. That said, there is still an elite group of photographers using film that inspire and amaze.
The work they put out is something which amateurs and professionals alike can appreciate as it captures more than just an image, but a colorful and vivid moment in time. These are the photographers who have become successful in their own right producing fine art photographs seen around the world.
Most well known for his panoramic landscape photographs, Peter Lik of Queensland, Australia is a master photographer with a distinct style all his own. He is the most awarded color landscape photographer in history and will certainly remain so for some time to come.
His self taught style captures the true colors of nature as he uses the sun during it's magical hour to see the brilliant colors in amazing locations. His work is printed as large format panorama, measuring a meter or more across, which leaves the casual viewer in awe of this fine art photography.
You can find some of his 15 galleries in New York, California, Florida, Las Vegas and Australia. While he currently has a piece in his Las Vegas gallery worth 1 Million Dollars, he offers other fine art photographs for the reasonable price of $2,500 which includes framing. Additionally, Peter has 3 coffee table books including Australia: Images of a Timeless Land, Spirit of America
, and Las Vegas and Beyond
. For great panoramic photo inspiration, these are a must.
Lisa Kristine emerged in the 1980's after spending 5 years in Asia photographing the people and places. Her focus is portraiture of the indigenous people and their lives.
She has since been to over 60 countries documenting the world's people, religions and humanity in its own right. Her style is very intimate with the subjects, as she admits to not using long lenses, rather getting up close and personal to her subjects, to create a very human piece of work. She also does not use filters or a flash as she sees the natural light of the people and places is a toll in itself which is to be appreciated.
You can find Lisa Kristine's Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Sonoma & Sausalito California. Lisa has two books as well as two DVD Documentaries which can be found on her web page.
Finally, we have Galen Rowell, a world renowned travel photographer, best known for his adventure photography, Galen got his start in 1972 as he had the cover story for National Geographic Magazine about Yosemite National Park. Galen has been highly regarded in photography, environmental issues, and mountaineering.
In 1984 Galen won the Ansel Adams Award for Wilderness Photography. Galen also developed a set of Graduated Neutral Density Filters which are still produced by Singh-Ray, which effectively extend the dynamic range of film. Sadly, in 2002 Galen and his wife Barbara passed away in a plane crash on their way back from a photo workshop in Alaska.
Today his work can be remembered at Mountain Light Gallery in California, which was founded by Galen in 1983. There you will find fine art prints of his best images from around the world in their full color beauty. In addition, Galen has over 20 books of his photography and writings which would be a great resource for any adventure and photography enthusiast.
