This video was produced by the good people at Fade Out Fade In. Sean has been working diligently as he continues to document his time spent in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Some folks out there might be familiar with betel nut. It is used like chewing tabacco.
The people were really lucky picks but completely random (those two Taiwanese at the beginning that is.) What's most insane about those two is that they were totally random picks, but both were completely ready to wax ecstatic for long periods of time about betel nut, both as a hobby and an industry. All the foreigners were friends of ours. The Taiwanese woman amongst us was our translator. She was amazing. I'm not sure if I want to do any videos without her in the future.
From what I gathered it is an acquired taste. Look for it next time you're in Taiwan for a truly blue collar experience.
Sean has been living in Taiwan since 2011, where he teaches English and produces documentaries for the web. If you would like more information about Betel Nut or teaching English, let us know.
