Video Production Jobs for the Video Professional

For those video production professionals who are looking for work that will send them traveling. Here are a few resources I have found as I search for work. Hundreds of opportunities are out there. If you have any other resources for finding video production jobs abroad, please let us know.

Pilot Guides - This group also shoots the TV show GlobeTrekker. They are accepting demo reels to their London Office, on VHS in PAL format.

Cruise Ships - Sometimes I feel like I'm beating an old horse as I used to work onboard ships as the Broadcast Tech, but they are always hiring people to shoot and edit passenger video and run the onboard Master Control.

The United Nations - They often have openings for a photographer cameraman at one of their locations. Do a search in the search box for "video" or "broadcast" and you will usually find plenty of options. I have heard, however, that to get a job with the UN you have to be connected or know someone. Myself and a friend have the exact experience needed but never get called back. Their loss... right?

Federal Government Jobs - If you can stand the slow pace of government work, then consider the US government for a video production job. The amount of travel will depend on the position, but occasionally I find some great options.

Gathering News Around the World

Reuters - This news gathering source has locations around the world. To land one of these jobs you should really know the local language or be at the top of your game. This is a great opportunity to travel and get behind the scenes while world events happen.

TVZ - TVZ is an online source for world news information. They also have a jobs section which includes positions all over the world. You can find current openings right here and get a great selection.

CCTV - Work for our friends across the pacific, CCTV. It's the state news station based out of Beijing, China. They have people working for them in other places to, so if you hate pollution, then shoot for somewhere besides Beijing. Sorry did I say pollution? I meant "fog". So, go ahead and apply to CCTV, you'll have reporting what the Politburo tells you is news. Like how the Tibetans love the Chinese Government and how Mao Zedong was a humanitarian.

Various Charitable organizations - I once saw an advert for a position to work providing video/photography services onboard an airplane that travels to third world countries to help cure blindness. It was similar to Doctors without Borders. It was a contract job and put you onboard with the medical staff as you traveled around the world. These jobs are out there, they just take a bit of persistence and creativity in finding.

Find yourself in a job like this by putting in a bit more legwork. For starters, do some research for organizations which you are interested in working with. Find their employment section and look for these job openings. Or better yet, contact the HR person and ask if this position exists. If not, propose that it should. If you do get a job, then contact me to come work with you.
